Botox Cosmetics®
BOTOX COSMETIC® is a protein derived from botulinum toxin, produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. Though classified as a neurotoxin, it is a highly purified protein and a safe pharmaceutical medication when used correctly and in small doses. BOTOX COSMETIC® has both cosmetic and medical applications.
Cosmetically, BOTOX COSMETIC® injections can reduce the appearance of skin wrinkles. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also approved it for treating various health issues, such as eyelid spasms, excessive sweating, some bladder disorders, and migraines.
Botox injections have many benefits for reducing the appearance of facial wrinkles. Here are just a few:

How long does BOTOX COSMETIC® last?
BOTOX COSMETIC® treatments generally last for 3-4 months, although the duration can vary depending on the individual. Some patients may experience effects lasting 4-6 months or as short as 2 months. It is not uncommon for first-time users to notice a shorter duration initially, with longer-lasting effects after the second treatment. Generally, a 4-month duration is expected.
How many units of BOTOX COSMETIC® do I need?
Each individual’s needs vary depending on the number of areas requiring injections and the strength of their facial muscles. During your consultation, Dr. Barsoom will assess your face and recommend the appropriate number of units. Most people fall within the following ranges: frown area (20-35 units), forehead (4-12 units), crow’s feet (9-18 units per side), bunny lines (3-5 units per side), brow lift (3-5 units per side), and Nefertiti neck lift (10-40 units, with 8-10 units per vertical band).
What are the side effects of BOTOX COSMETIC®?
Side effects or allergic reactions from the medication itself are extremely rare. Some people may develop temporary bruising at the injection site, which can be easily concealed with makeup. You may resume normal activities immediately. Mild headaches or flu-like symptoms may occur shortly after treatment. Small bumps at the injection site are common but will disappear by the time you leave the office. Mild bruising may also occur, resolving within 24-48 hours. You will receive instructions on post treatment care. Very rarely, ptosis (droopy eyelid) can occur, potentially lasting a week. However, even these side effects will resolve over time and pose no serious health risks.
Which areas can be treated with BOTOX COSMETIC®?
Common treatment areas include crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines. Other uses include masseter slimming, gummy smile reduction, and neck line softening.
What can I expect immediately after my BOTOX COSMETIC® treatment?
Redness at the injection site is common and will subside within an hour. Bruising may also occur, taking 7-10 days to fully resolve. Makeup can be applied to cover bruises after 4 hours post-injection.
At what age is it recommended to start using BOTOX COSMETIC®?
There is evidence suggesting long-term BOTOX COSMETIC® use can delay and even prevent the onset of dynamic wrinkles. Since visible signs of aging typically appear in our 30s, preventative use in the mid-20s is advised for areas such as crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead lines. As we age, dynamic wrinkles can become static and deepen, so early prevention is a beneficial strategy.
When do the effects of BOTOX COSMETIC® show?
Generally, BOTOX COSMETIC® begins to take effect within 3-5 days, but it is common for full and final results to appear after 10-14 days. I advise my patients to wait a full 2 weeks following their BOTOX COSMETIC® injection, and if a touch-up is needed at that point, we will address it accordingly.
